The National Monuments Service is responsible for maintaining a statutory inventory of known archaeological sites established and maintained under the Historic and Archaeological Heritage and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2023.
- Information about sites currently included in the inventory can be found on the Historic Environment Viewer.
- The data is compiled from a range of sources including surveys, reports on licensed archaeological work and reports made by members of the public.
- The existing data is primarily focused on the pre-1700AD period, but does include a selection of later sites.
- The data collected is checked and revised on an ongoing basis and is a key source for knowledge and awareness of our archaeological heritage.
- The assistance of the public is welcomed and appreciated. If, having checked the online information in the Historic Environment Viewer, you have information about an archaeological site not currently in the records, please complete a Monument Report Form and submit it to nationalmonuments@housing.gov.ie .
