The National Monuments Service carries out the following business functions in relation to World Heritage:
- Acts as the focal point for the overall implementation of the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention in Ireland;
- Coordinates the implementation of the World Heritage Strategy;
- Provides guidance, advice and support in relation to the effective management of Irish World Heritage Properties and nomination of Tentative List Sites;
- Prepares and maintains Ireland’s Tentative List of World Heritage Properties;
- Coordinates government engagement and participation in World Heritage matters;
- Leads on the drafting and implementation of management plans for World Heritage Properties in state ownership or where the state is a major stakeholder, in partnership with the OPW and other key stakeholders.
