Monuments in State Care

The National Monuments Service has the following roles and responsibilities in relation to national monuments in the ownership or guardianship of the Minister:

  • Implementation of legislation, regulation and policy in relation to the protection of national monuments in the ownership or guardianship of the Minister;
  • Responsibility for the day-to-day management and conservation of these national monuments rests with the Office of Public Works (OPW), and the National Monuments Service provides archaeological expertise to the OPW.
