The National Monuments Service has the following role and responsibilities in relation to Licensing and Planning:
- Regulation of archaeological activities (including the use of detection devices) and works to monuments;
- Promotion of best practice in regard to archaeological activities and protection of archaeological heritage in a development context;
- Coordination of Code of Practice agreements with external partners;
- Provision of advice on archaeological heritage matters to planning/permitting authorities, developers and any others involved in the planning and development process.
