Protection and Conservation

The National Monuments Service ensures the protection and conservation of monuments by:

  • Protecting our archaeological heritage through the framework of applicable legislation;
  • Responding to reports of threat or damage to archaeological monuments, including reports of heritage crime;
  • Reviewing proposals to carry out works at archaeological monuments;
  • Engaging with stakeholders and communities in raising awareness about the protection of our archaeological heritage;
  • Funding and managing the Community Monuments Fund;
  • Coordinating delivery of objectives under the Climate Change Sectoral Adaptation Plan for Built and Archaeological Heritage.
