The Community Monuments Fund (CMF) — established by National Monuments Service in 2020 — aims to conserve, maintain, protect and promote local archaeological monuments and historic sites.
The CMF makes funding available for essential repairs and capital works for the conservation of archaeological monuments that are deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support. Funding is also provided for the development of Conservation Management Plans to identify measures that may be needed to conserve monuments. The aim is to build their resilience, to help them withstand the effects of climate change.
Grants are also available to enhance public access infrastructure and interpretation at archaeological monuments, to improve their presentation and encourage access to them.
The CMF is administered by National Monuments Service through Local Authorities. Since 2020, over €26.5m has been awarded under the fund, to 600 heritage projects.
The CMF is an annual scheme. Calls for applications are announced in October or November of each year. Further information on the scheme, including eligibility criteria and details of the application process, can be found on the Gov.ie website: https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-housing-local-government-and-heritage/publications/community-monuments-fund-2025-call-for-projects/#streams-1-3
