How to Report the Discovery of an Archaeological Object
Under Irish law, ownership of any archaeological object with no known owner is vested in the state. Anyone who finds an archaeological object or artefact must report it — within 96 hours — to the National Museum of Ireland or to a designated county or city museum in the locality.
To make a report, please contact: The Duty Officer, Irish Antiquities Division, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2; telephone +353 (0)1 6777444; alternatively use the National Museum of Ireland’s Contact Us form on its website.
Anyone found guilty of an offence relating to reporting the discovery of an archaeological object is subject to a fine of up to €111,100 and/or 5 years imprisonment.
