Armada 1588: Ireland and Spain – A Shared Underwater Cultural Heritage

The National Monuments Service is hosting a one-day event in the Southern Hotel, Sligo on Friday 20 September 2024 to highlight the shared underwater heritage that exists between Spain and Ireland.

Shipwreck records provide evidence of clear ties between the two nations over the centuries, and a strengthening  partnership approach between Ireland and Spain to protecting and understanding this shared heritage is developing.

The seminar will bring together national and international speakers, including government heritage managers, stakeholders and community representatives to discuss Ireland’s approach to protecting its underwater cultural heritage, the 2001 UNESCO Convention, collective efforts in place between Ireland and Spain on the wrecks of the Spanish Armada and hear about future projects.

The one-day seminar is organised to complement the annual Remembering the Armada series of commemorative events taking place 19-22 September 2024 in Sligo and at Grange, Streedagh Beach and Killybegs. Information is available on the Spanish Armada Ireland Website.
